The tradition of songwriter showcases continues at The Artichoke. This evening, I'll be hosting and performing in the Sunday Showcase with talented singer/songwriters Aslin, Jeremy Herzer, and Marianne Flemming.
Aslin is an Oregon-born singer-songwriter whose music blends indie folk, country, and a touch of playful grit. Growing up writing songs and performing across Oregon’s cafés, house shows, and open mics, Aslin has spent years building a sound that feels both deeply personal and instantly familiar.
Jeremy Herzer is a songwriter whose work leans into quiet intensity, crafting emotionally rich stories with understated grace. His lyrics often hold space for doubt, longing, and a longing for greater resilience.
Originally from south Florida, Marianne Flemming has been a professional musician and singer-songwriter for more than 30 years, winning numerous songwriting and "Best of" awards for her unique perspective on the rich tapestry of American music.

Kelly Brightwell and I share the stage with two sets of music tonight, joined by our friend and sideman guitarist-of-textural-atmospheres Jeff Koch. We will play some of our songs solo and complement each on several others with backing vocals. I'll be backing Kelly on bass and keys as well. Come out and hang with us!
My latest album "If The Sky Fell" was released in late January, but I simply had too much on my plate to pull together musicians for a release concert at that time. Once the album went live, it was off to the races with non-musical catch-up, including house projects and some travel. At last, a full-band concert is on the books, featuring Portland luminaries Jean-Pierre Garau on keyboard, Bryan Daste on pedal steel and guitar, Dale Jones on bass, and James Kehn on drums and percussion. Come out on a mellow, almost-equinox Friday afternoon and enjoy the show!

The final show, the 40-year anniversary of Tom May's national radio program River City Folk will be recorded on Saturday before a live audience at The Artichoke. Tom has invited the Dave Ross Trio and yours truly to be his last guests on this landmark, end-of-an-era program. Over the years, Tom has invited many wonderful guests to the show, a significant number of which were recorded in Portland, produced by his longtime friend and musical cohort in Omaha, Clete Baker. Showtime on Saturday, July 12, is at 2:00pm, doors open at 1:30. We hope you will join us for a rousing send-off of Tom's outstanding program. Admission is free.
Joining my singer-songwriter friend David Gross in the Artichoke Afternoons series. David has been performing for over 60 years. The Chicago native was a stalwart of the club scene there, and toured the Midwest, often opening for such artists as Odetta, John Prine, Tom Waits, and many more. He was under contract as a songwriter with Chappelle Music in Los Angeles before moving to Oregon. I'll be playing bass and a bit of keyboard, and David will also be joined by drummer and backing vocalist Andrew Greene. Doors at 12:30pm.
Tickets on sliding scale: $5-10.

Marianne has toured the country for two decades in years past with her own distinct voice and song style. She often combines jazz, pop, rock and folk influences. I will likely play a few tunes of my own. She will also be joined by fiddler and vocalist Olivia Duffy. Cover charge. http://www.marianneflemmingmusic.com/
