Excited to be playing a virtual house concert, at Johnson Studio House Concerts, from Portland to Texas by way of lots of digital bits, on March 27th, 7:00-8:30 pm CDT (5pm PDT). Hosted by Pam and James Johnson. Special thanks to them for the invitation. I will be joined by my good friend and master keyboardist, Jean-Pierre Garau, well-known here in Portland and beyond as a busy sideman, session player, composer and teacher. See the JSHC link above for RSVP instructions and the Zoom link. There is no admission cost although we of course appreciate donations, via either of the links below. Hope to see you there!
A streaming concert on Halloween night to support those impacted by the region's wildfires this year. Hosted by Tom May, and will include performances by Tom, Pretty Gritty, and Dan Weber (I will be Dan's sideman on bass and backup vocal). The concert is being pre-recorded at Artichoke Music on Oct 15, in front of a limited live audience (socially distanced). Additional information will be available on the Artichoke website for contributing.
A return engagement for me on "River City Folk," this time as Dan Weber's sideman (bass and backup vocal) while he joins Tom May to record a show edition as the featured guest this month. As always, a great time with Dan.
The Tumbleweed Music Festival, held each year in Richland, Washington (Tri-Cities area), on the banks of the Columbia River, has been changed to a virtual festival this year due to Covid. A ton of work went into pulling together many video performances and organizing the online festival event. And the organizers have continued the song contest as well. Streaming starts on September 4 and continues through the weekend. I will be on the "West Stage". There is no online fee or cover charge. Enjoy!! https://tumbleweedmusicfestival.org/west-stage/
Well-known folksinger Tom May, the long time radio host and producer of his national show "River City Folk" has invited me to be on the show as his featured guest. I'm really looking forward to this. We will be "taping" the show (who uses tape for video anymore?) in front of a live audience (socially distanced, of course) at Artichoke Music in Portland. The show will air at 4pm on Oct 17, 2020, on many community radio stations across the country, and on the web at https://folkmusicnotebook.com.
With the onset of the pandemic, music events have been curtailed in many places, amid so much concern about illness and what is the long range picture for this emergency. Musicians are finding ways to bring joy to some local, socially distanced events, often outdoors. David Gross and I will be staging an outdoor neighborhood concert in Beaverton, to the delight of his neighbors as well as our own happiness at just playing out again!
Looking forward to a few days in arid New Mexico, in the town formerly known as Hot Springs - and I'll be taking a soak or two in local pools - while I lay down bass tracks for Dan Weber's upcoming album release, "The Way the River Goes." Rob Stroup moved his studio operations from Portland (formerly 8 Ball Studio) to New Mexico a couple years ago. Dan and I are excited about the project and about working with Rob again. Woot!
Dan Weber return engagement at the Olalla Community Club. I will be joining Dan as his sideman, on bass and backup vocals. Always a good time. Dan is a great songwriter and one of the best storytellers I know, and gets the audience energy up. For our friends in Olalla, come out and see us!
Sharing the stage tonight with my friend David Gross... we will each take a set, and also play a bit on each others' sets. A Chicago native, David is an amazing singer-songwriter who incorporates elements of folk, blues, rock, and jazz in his fingerstyle guitar work, and he has a fabulous tenor voice reminiscent of Roy Orbison. David has opened for John Prine,Tom Waits, Odetta, Dave Van Ronk, Supertramp, and many others.
Come out and see us, and enjoy the great vibe, food and drink at the Hostel Cafe. No cover charge.
Sharing the stage with Woody Moran and Kelly Brightwell, aka Radio Stranger, along with our talented guitar wizard sideman, Jeff Koch. We will be doing a number of our songs, both solo and in band format, and a few choice covers. As usual, I will be on bass or keys for Radio Stranger, and on guitar or keys for my own songs. Come on out for a fine evening of music at Artichoke.
Spinella's, 436 N Main Ave, Gresham, OR
A return to Spinella's in Gresham, for another evening show in the Songwriter Sessions series. This night I will be sharing the stage with Portland songstress and environmental activist Alexa Wiley, and another of my fav Portland songwriters with his own take on life, "pop savvy" Tom Arnold. As always, great food and libations at Spinella's. Stop by and see us.
Artichoke Music, 2007 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR
The Avett Others (Portland's Avett Brother tribute band) returns to one of Portland's favorite acoustic listening rooms, at Artichoke Music. Always a great time and the venue has a fabulous live sound. I am on drums when with the Avett Others, also known simply as "The AO". We will also be playing some original tunes. C'mon and see us for the last Portland show of the year!
Kiawanda Community Center, 34600 Cape Kiwanda Dr, Pacific City, OR
The Avett Others return to Pacific City on the Oregon Coast, to provide the groove for the local Oktoberfest celebrations. We will be at the Kiawanda Community Center, just a stone's throw from the ocean. More of your Avett Brothers favorite songs, plus AO originals. Yours truly sitting in on drums again. Plenty of great German food, and multiple beers to choose from. No polkas though! C'mon out. Weather will be perfect.
SW Regional Folk Alliance, Austin, TX
Returning once again to one of my favorite times and activities of the year - four days at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Conference, to convene and refresh with music friends and songwriters and join in various showcases and song swaps during hang time. The official showcases are open to the public. Check the website for times/locations.
New World Deli, 4101 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX
As I land in Austin once again in preparation for the SW Regional Folk Alliance conference, I will be stopping by the New World Deli on Friday 9/20, a favorite songwriter hangout and listening space, not to mention great organic food deli, to join forces with Austin songwriter Scott Martin and Salt Lake City songwriter Alicia Stockman. Sure to be a fun time and some excellent music shall rise. If you are in the area, come and see us!
NW Hostel Cafe, 1810 NW Glisan St, Portland, OR
I'll be getting together once again with Portland Americana songstress and friend Kelly Brightwell in a shared show this night. We will be playing our favorite songs in duo mode. If you missed the show last month with Dan Weber, come on down to the Hostel Cafe tonight and hang with us.
NW Hostel Cafe, 1810 NW Glisan St, Portland, OR
Joining my friend Dan Weber for another of his energetic shows which get everyone swaying and smiling and singing along. With a history that includes a former life as a Park Ranger, not to mention many travels across the U.S., Dan knows how to tell a great story as well. I'll be backing Dan on bass. C'mon down to the outdoor space at the Hostel Cafe for delicious food, craft microbrew, and various other goodies. And music!
Private House Concert w/ Scott Martin, West Seattle, WA
Looking forward to joining my good friend, Austin songwriter and fabulous fingerstyle guitarist Scott Martin, for his house concert at the lovely private home known among friends as "Chateau Relaxo," a beautiful site in West Seattle overlooking Puget Sound. I will be opening one of the sets with a couple of my own songs from my upcoming album project, and playing bass for Scott as he shares stories and songs from his amazing album "Missing" as well as newer songs. Scott is one of several winners in the recent Songwriters Serenade Songwriter Contest in central Texas. He has an amazing singing voice as well.
Pacific City Music Fest 10th Edition, Pacific City, OR
The final day and, as rumor has it, the final edition of the Pacific City Music Fest... a great gathering of music players, writers and aficionados mostly from the Portland area. I will be playing in two bands tonight... the Avett Others once again, as well as joining my good friend and well-known songwriter and raconteur Dan Weber, along with guitarist Jerry Towell and me on bass, as we shake the trees with a mix of Dan's songs and his favorites from the Grateful Dead over the years. Promises to be one heck of a good time, especially given the Dead fans in the crowd!
Twist Wine, 34930 Brooten Rd, Pacific City, OR
The official kickoff of the 10th Pacific City Music Fest finds our gang of songwriters and musicians in a procession of short showcases at the fabulous tasting room of Twist Wine in Pacific City. If you missed last light at the Oar House, come hang with us. I will be playing a few of my own tunes, accompanied by bassist Dale Jones.
